Superintendent's Message

Donald Coletta Superintendent

I am happy to report that in 2012 our School District was rated "Excellent" by the Ohio Department of Education.  At the building level, Noble School was rated "Excellent with Distinction;" Krout School, Tiffin Middle School, and Columbian High School were rated "Excellent;" and Clinton School, Lincoln School, and Washington School were rated "Effective."

The District met 25 of 26 indicators on Ohio's local report card and our performance index score was a 100.6, only the second time the District has scored 100 or better on this standard.  In addition, the District met Adequate Yearly Progress and the value-added measure.  We are very proud of our students, parents, teachers, and support staff for achieving these outstanding results.

As we enter into a new era at TCS with students in grades K-1 attending Washington School, students in grades 2-3 attending Krout School, and students in grades 4-5 attending Noble School, I want to emphasize our guarantee that all students will achieve success at their full learning potential.  Please know we are committed to provide an outstanding educational experience for all of our students.

On another matter, due to the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, we have received a number of questions about our school safety plans and emergency procedures.  I want you to know our primary responsibility is to provide all students with a safe environment while under our care.  We take this responsibility very seriously.

We have a Board-approved School Emergency Procedures Ready Reference Manual in place, which was just revised this past September.  Drills are conducted on a regular basis so our students and staff are ready to respond to fires, tornadoes, unwanted intruders, and other emergency situations.

We also have a Safety Committee that meets on a regular basis to review, modify, and update our safety plans.  This committee includes the police chief, the city and township fire chiefs, the sheriff, representatives from the highway patrol and the emergency management association, a parent, and school staff members.  In addition, this year’s Continuous Improvement Planning Team has a subcommittee that is specifically studying student and staff safety.

I want to emphasize we evaluate our safety plans on a regular basis and will continue to look for ways to make them better.  We are committed to doing everything we can to provide a safe environment for our students and staff.  If you have concerns, see an unsafe situation, or have suggestions on how we can improve our safety plans, I encourage you to share them with me at your convenience.

You are always welcome to contact me at 419-447-2515 (extension 1303) or at don_coletta@tiffincityschools.org if you have questions or comments about any of the services we provide our students.  I would be happy to provide you with additional information, answer your questions, or simply listen to your comments.

Best wishes for a successful and rewarding second semester!
