Lesson Plans for 8/27/12 - 8/31/12

Monday, August 27:
Purpose/Lesson Goal:  To gather baseline information about each students current reading ability and to measure student responses to literal, inferential and evaluative questions. 
Pre-Assessment:  Students will be asked to think of the "weirdest" food they've ever eaten.  Discuss Travel Channel's Andrew Zimmern and his show Bizzare Food
1)Students will complete the Elementary Reading Interest Survey featuring everyone's favorite lasagna lover, Garfield! 
2) Begin Scholastic Reading Inventory Testing (4 students at a time)
3) Students who are waiting their turn for the SRI tests will complete the short, non-fiction story "More Gross, but Edible Foods
Post Assessment:  Gather and analyze information from the Scholastic Reading Inventory to create groups for station work and reading teams. 

Tuesday, August 28
Purpose/Lesson Goal:  To gather baseline information about each students' current reading ability.  To measure student responses to literal, inferential and evaluative questions. 
Pre-Assessment:  Students will be asked to think of their daily hygience routine.  How would it be different without the technology of today?  What would you use instead?
1) Students will complete the Scholastic Reading Inventory tests (4 students at a time)
2) Students who are waiting their turn for the SRI test will complete the short, non-fiction story "A Brief History of Hygiene".
3) Introduce Read 180 software

Post Assessment:  Gather and analyze the information from the Scholastic Reading Inventory to create groups for reading teams and station work. 


Wednesday, August 29
Purpose/Lesson Goal:  To gauge student understanding of main ideas and supporting details and successfully begin using the Read 180 software and Read 180 Station. 
Pre-Assessment:  Students will be asked three sample questions about main idea and supporting details

Reading Groups 1 and 2
Software Zone and Reading Zone

Lesson Goal:  The students will familiarize themselves with the Read 180 software and independent reading books.

Reading Groups 3 and 4: 
Teacher Zone and Independent Study Zone

Lesson Goal:  Introduce and practice determining the main idea and supporting details of a short selection.

Teacher Zone/Independent Study:  Student

Thursday, August 30 
Purpose/Lesson Goal:  To gauge student understanding of main ideas and supporting details and successfully begin using the Read 180 software and Read 180 Station. 
Pre-Assessment:  Students will be asked three sample questions about main idea and supporting details

Purpose/Lesson Goal:  To familiarize students with biweekly rskills tests.

1) Complete small section of rskills test as a large group.
2) Allow the students to complete the rest of the test on their own.
3) Travel as a class to the school library.
